At Key Stage 3, English is taught in tutor groups in Years 7 and 8. In Year 9, mixed ability groups are created plus two small groups of EAL students who are very early English learners.
At Key Stage 4, all students are given the opportunity to take GCSEs in English and English Literature. Students are taught in mixed ability groups and there is one EAL group. At both key stages, EAL students are moved into mainstream classes when their language acquisition has reached the stage where they can access the curriculum without additional support.
At Key Stage 3, students are prepared for the SATS at the end of Year 9. Students study two class readers each year and most of the National Curriculum requirements are delivered through the teaching of these texts. Students will also study Shakespeare's work, poetry and a range of non-fiction texts.
At Key Stage 4, AQA English and English Literature Syllabi A are taught. Students study a Shakespeare play, a 20th Century novel and play, media, non-fiction texts and the writing skills acquired at Key Stage 3 are developed and refined.
There is a strong emphasis at both key stages on developing Speaking and Listening skills.
We aim to ensure that all students leave Acton High School with a love and appreciation of literature for life; as competent readers and writers and with the ability to talk confidently in a variety of different contexts.
