WELCOME to ACTON HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY
Here is some information about our Library:
When students join our School, we stress that this is their Library and we are here to help them with their research and leisure reading. We aim to make the Library a comfortable and accessible place for all students. School Ambassadors help with the running of the Library.
Access ~ The Library is open from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm Monday to Thursday. All students may use the Library; we do not have restrictions on access. Groups or individuals may book time in the Library during the day.
Homework Club ~ In addition to clubs run by teachers, students may come to The Library for help and support with school work. The Library is open before lessons begin, at the end of the school day as well as at break and lunchtimes.
Borrowing ~ Students may borrow three books, initially for three weeks. We do not charge fines, preferring to use our Reminder system to help students establish a routine of borrowing and returning books.
Fiction section ~ aims to cater for all interests and reading abilities and we are always looking for new authors/genres to include. We try to reach everyone by asking students for their views on books and authors.
NonFiction section ~ mainly relates to the Curriculum with a significant number of books of general interest. The Reference Library has recently been expanded with an extra specialist reference books, encyclopaedia and dictionaries. Students make extensive use of this section, from which there is a free photocopying facility.
Careers Library ~ we work closely with the Connexions Careers Service for Schools to provide up-to-date information on career options and opportunities.
Post-16 Education ~ Information and Prospectuses for Colleges and for Universities
IT ~ The on-line PCs are linked to colour printers. They are used by staff and students throughout the day. There is a rota system for students at lunchtimes to help ensure fair spread of use. PCs are available for use during Homework Club.
Media ~ We subscribe to: The Guardian ~ The Independent ~ The Ealing and Acton Gazette ~ The Week ~ The Voice ~ Eastern Eye ~ TES ~ Aquila and TBK book magazines ~ Ace Tennis ~ British Tennis ~ Books for Keeps ~ The School Librarian. We regularly provide various other magazines on sport, computers and music.
The School Bookclub offers students a new booklet each month. All books are sold at discount prices. We join with the English Department to run a Book Fair each term.
We support Book Aid International, a charity that distributes books to areas of the world which are desperate for resources. We are also linked to schools in The Gambia
A Library Newsletter is sent to students and staff to keep everyone informed and encourage everyone to share their enthusiasm for reading with book reviews, author profiles and web links.
