MATHEMATICS AT ACTON HIGH SCHOOL

The Mathematics Department aim to:

  • Provide all students, regardless of their ability and background, with the opportunity to reach their full potential in mathematics;
  • Give each student the feeling that learning mathematics is stimulating and enjoyable;
  • Provide the skills, knowledge and understanding to allow students to be able to solve problems, to reason and to think logically;
  • Provide the necessary skills to apply mathematics across the curriculum and in real life situations.

Curriculum Structure:

KS3

In Year 7, students are taught in mixed ability tutor groups during ther first Month of Transition. The topics covered are differentiated to cater for individual needs of the pupils. Students are taught in ability groups afterwards. Students attaining level 5 in Intitial Assessment are then targeted to do 2 years of Key Stage 3. The others will be split between a Diploma group and a Core group who stay on for 3 years in KS3.

In Years 8 and 9, students are taught in ability groups. During this time, students are prepared for end of key stage exams which take place at the end of Year 9.

The curriculum covers all areas of Mathematics. These include:

  • Using and Applying Mathematics;
  • Geometry and Measure;
  • Statistics;
  • Number and Algebra

Regular assessments take place to monitor progress and to allow students the opportunity to move to a group that is better suited to their needs.

KS4

Mathematics GCSE

All students study GCSE Mathematics in the Upper School. The work covered builds on the students' achievements in KS3.

Statistics GCSE

Students who gain a good pass in the end of key stage exams in Year 9 are offered an additional qualification - GCSE Statistics. Most students will sit this exam at the end of Year 10.

ICT

Information technology plays an important part in the life of Acton High School. This is especially true in Maths where you will use computers to give you practice in a number of mathematical topics or to help you solve puzzles and problems.

Out of Lesson Provision

You will be expected to complete at least two pieces of work out of lessons each week which will give parents or guardians an opportunity to see what you are doing at school. This is to consolidate and to extend your classroom knowledge.

Clubs

The Maths Clubs at lunch times and after school are run in small groups to help understand topics and with your homework. There will also be games and puzzles.
