Performing Arts
The Performing Arts Curriculum Area embraces Music and Drama. Both these subjects are taught to every child for the first three years in school and they study each of the two subjects for one hour every week.
The philosophy that underpins our teaching is the notion of "Educating the Self" and we are convinced that people who are in touch with their creativity at a young age, become happier, more balanced people, and they are ultimately more fulfilled and can manage their lives better. We believe that lunch time and after school activities on a regular basis, enrich the students' education and give them a greater degree of freedom and expression. We aim to further the development of individual responsibility whilst also ensuring the students' enjoyment through a wide range of group activities and experiences which they can choose to participate in.
DRAMA
All work in years 7,8 and 9 covers three areas:
- Conventional Stage Skills - improvising, role play, creating characters, working with others, confidence building and Drama Games.
- Exploring issues relevant to their lives and those of others.
- Learning how to apply many different Dramatic Devices.
In the GCSE course, students are encouraged to develop and combine the above skills and issues to create challenging and innovative drama.
A variety of clubs provide the opportunity to develop your drama further, through writing, performing, filming and editing activities.
We aim to develop the skills and tools you'll need to create effective and thought-provoking theatre.

The Music Department at Acton High School thrives on the energy of its students. The children's spirit and commitment to learning and experimentation in music propels the achievement in this subject forward. We encourage all students to participate in lunch time and after school practice schedules, rehearsals and ensembles, to ensure that they reach their maximum potential. It is our ultimate goal to see every child succeed to the very best of their ability and to have fun along the way!
In years 7,8 and 9, all pupils are taught using the new Key Stage Three Strategy for Music, which is about, "Understanding the Conventions of," a wide range of Musical styles and idioms. They gain this understanding, knowledge and skills, through listening, discussing, making connections, singing, playing, games and other various activities. All learning styles are catered for, and pupils have opportunities to tune in to their preferred activity so that they can access the learning.
GCSE Music is a very popular and successful course, where many students delve more deeply into musical understanding, and develop their expertise in singing and playing instruments. Several topics are studied in depth and there are opportunities for solo and ensemble work as well as composition for a range of ensembles. Students who study GCSE are expected to participate in Band and Orchestra, and lots of extra practice is necessary.
A team of visiting musicians features strongly in the life of Music at Acton High. We offer lessons in all woodwind instruments, brass, percussion, violin, piano and guitar.
