Student Council
The Acton High School Student Council was set up in the autumn term of 2007. Students nominated themselves and spoke in assembly about how they could help improve the school if they were voted onto the Council. The Student Council comprised 5 elected members per year group totalling 25 representatives. Council members were expected to feedback regularly on the Council's work and progress to their year groups through speeches in assemblies. They also attended Senior Leadership Team meetings twice every term.
Meetings were held weekly on Wednesdays where a diverse range of issues were discussed. The Council was consulted on the Curriculum change by Mr. Lassiter including student views on the Flexi days and KS3 change. Mr. Amaning consulted the Council on the school's behaviour policy and a large amount of work was done on gathering opinions from the school body on a school uniform change. Work on this topic is ongoing and a working party comprising Student Council members, students from the school body and staff has been set up to follow up feedback from a questionnaire devised by the Student Council.
Furthermore the Acton High School Student Council has been consulted on issues outside the school. Ealing Council came to ask Student Council members their opinions on how a one million pound budget could be spent to improve the local area. We also took some Student Council members and other students from the school body to a Well London consortium on how South Acton Estate could be improved where local residents were keen to hear the voice of Acton High School students.
This year we aim to allow the Student Council to flourish even more. Immediately after the newly elected Council has been set up all representatives will attend a day long workshop run by Student Council UK where they will be fully trained on how to be effective in utilising and promoting student voice.
