European Projects
Last July 2010, the European Union approved the Bilateral Comenius Project "MATES" which was developed by the English Department of the Institute in collaboration with Juan de Mairena School in Spain. Spain is the country coordinator of this initiative.
This project aims to develop multilingual learning and encourage mutual understanding between our students in order to raise their awareness of the cultural diversity. It will also aim at promoting tolerance and enhancing ICT skills. Furthermore, it will help to improve and develop their literacy and foreign language skills which will contribute to nurture their creativity and increase their motivation.
The main objective of MATES is to unite pupils and teachers from both countries through setting up an exchange between our schools in London and in Spain The project will focus at improving Spanish and English by developing a cultural awareness.
Project activities will be integrated into the school curriculum. They will be carried out by all pupils involved in the project in each school with the dissemination of results among the rest of classes, local community and European level.
We believe that this initiative is a very enriching experience for our entire Institute and especially to our students while improving their Spanish and have the opportunity to share experiences with peers and learn about Spanish culture.
The first exchange trip has taken place on the 4th April 2011 with Acton High School students visiting the Juan de Mairena School. (click here to read article).
Students from the Juan de Mairena School will be visiting Acton High School in April 2012.
