Windrush Oral History Project
Acton High and the Ealing Windrush consortium have developed links with a secondary school in Winchester, Hants The Kings School. Together we will work with Y8 students from both schools and African Caribbean elders from the community in Ealing to produce an Oral History Project capturing their experiences of how they came to England, settled and made a success of their lives.
The Project encourages intergenerational and cross cultural meetings, interviews and visits and a skilling-up of the young students.
In June, all partners involved in the Project met at Acton High where we had a summit to discuss the application and the pilot Oral History Project already undertaken by Acton High and EWC and meet the Y9 students involved.
Our partners from Kings School were then taken on a visit to the London Metropolitan Archives.
In July, Acton High and EWC successfully launched the pilot Oral History DVD.
Currently we are in the process of applying for external funding to enable visits between schools, excursions to museums, and other relevant institutions, research, inviting local speakers, producing a DVD and so forth to make a success of the Oral History Project.
A particular focus in the project will be the culture clash in education, skills training and employment prospects that the settlers experienced when they first arrived in the UK.
