Avery Hill Geography - Geography at GCSE aims to explore many of the key environmental issues that the World will face in the future. It uses the knowledge that you will have built up over key stage 3, to study 4 main units.
- Climate, the environment and people.
- Water, landforms and people.
- People, work and development.
- People and place.
Each unit describes various human and natural processes and than examines how human activities have influenced them. The course covers issues such as climate change, acid rain, flooding, drought, poverty and urban registration. All units involve the study of real places, to build up a selection of case studies from around the world. Students develop a range of skills that will open up many career opportunities. They include:
- Researching and presenting information.
- Explaining your own opinions about issues.
- Decision making skills.
- Various ICT and graphical skills.
- Undertaking surveys and questionnaires.
The syllabus requires you to produce two pieces of coursework, one of which is based upon fieldwork. You also sit two examination papers, one short answer the other a problem solving exercise. If you have an interest in the environment, current affairs and the news, then GCSE Geography could be the subject for you.
