History

Do you want to understand the world around you? Do you want to know why wars start, why NATO and United Nations often intervene and how international problems can be solved? Are you interested by History? Only through studying the past can we begin to understand the present.

The study of History at GCSE (EDEXCEL Syllabus B) focuses on the histories of Britain, America, Russia as well as the conflict in Northern Ireland. You will study civil rights in the USA, the Vietnam War, the roles of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. You will also look at the Russian Revolution and the rise and fall of Communism.

By studying History at GCSE, you will:

  • Acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of different themes and values e.g. freedom of speech, human rights, democracy.
  • Develop skills such as writing reports, assessing bias, producing extended pieces of writing.
  • Study a GCSE that has important careers value utilizing communication, research and analytical skills. Many journalists, solicitors, barristers, writers and professionals working in IT will have studied History before starting their careers.

Remember that in the words of Joseph Stalin, ‘History is a dangerous subject'
