Sociology

Who? Why? When? Where?

If you've ever looked for answers Sociology is the subject for you! Studying GCSE Sociology helps you to gain a critical understanding and awareness of the complicated society we live in. During this two year course you will ‘become sociologists'! This will involve you:

Carrying out your own research using interviews, observations and questionnaires.

Analysing and interpreting information.

Evaluating information and statistical data.

You will look in depth at the following areas:

  • The Family
  • Education
  • Work
  • Social Stratification
  • Gender
  • Poverty and the Welfare state
  • Power and control
  • Crime and deviance
  • Migration and Movement

In year 11 you will produce an extended piece of coursework which is worth 20% of your overall mark (the examination is worth the remaining 80%). Coursework titles involve you looking in depth at the following and other areas:

  • Does the media stereotype people?
  • Why does poverty still exist today?
  • The relationship between social class and educational attainment.
