ICT - KS3

All students in years 7 to 9 have two double lessons of core ICT per two week cycle (red & blue week). Students work on a wide variety of projects designed to give them a diverse experience of ICT. The programme of study is designed to provide a foundation for the continued and progressive use of ICT by students within all subjects in school as well as equipping students for the world of work.

Year 7

In Year 7 students complete the following topics:

Introduction to ICT; London Integrated project; Spreadsheets; Information Quality; Desktop Publishing; Scratch; Databases; Presentations; Website design.

Year 8

In Year 8 students continue to develop the skills they have been introduced to in Year 7; we start the year by teaching them new skills in recording and editing sound and then move onto projects about Spreadsheets, Scratch, an integrated unit based around web design, desktop publishing, databases, and presentations.

Year 9

In Year 9 students follow the OCR Nationals in ICT short course, completing Unit 1: ICT Skills in Business, here they learn about how safe working practices are applied in a business environment; how to download files/ information and how to use email in a business context; how to design and create a business presentation to accompany a talk, using presentation software; how to design and create business documents using word processing or DTP software; how to design, create and use a business spreadsheet; and how to use tools and facilities in database software to enter, sort and search for information for business purposes.

At the end of Year 9, students complete a short unit preparing them for ICT in KS4.

How is ICT assessed at Key Stage 3?

In years 7 and 8, students are assessed on the class work they have completed and will be given a National Curriculum level at the end of each project as well as targets on how to improve.

In year 9, students are assessed on the coursework that they complete for the OCR Nationals in ICT short course; the work is teacher assessed, moderated within the department and then externally moderated by a moderator from the OCR exam board. If students pass the course, they are awarded Pass, Merit or Distinction for their work and will receive a certificate recognising their achievement.
