ICT - KS4
The ICT department offers a wide variety of subjects for students to choose from.
Applied ICT: (2 GCSEs)
Throughout this course students will learn about how ICT affects groups and individuals in society, we look at the use of mobile phones, CCTV and how the police use technology in their line of work. Students will also study how businesses use ICT to run successfully and we visit several organisations such as Cadbury's and Morrison's to see how they incorporate ICT. Finally students design an ICT system for an organisation, create business documents, a database and a web page.
Students will study three units:
Unit 1 - ICT Tools and Applications
Unit 2 - ICT in Organisations
Unit 3 - ICT and Society
GCSE ICT: (1 GCSE)
This course offers students an exiting and wide variety of activities to further develop and embed their ICT skills. The course is set around a scenario of a travel agency and students will learn how to design a travel brochure for a country of their choice using MS Publisher. They will use a range of research techniques to gather resources for their brochure (e.g. the internet, magazines, newspapers and CD ROMs). Students further develop their understanding of "How ICT Affects Society" by creating a Power Point presentation on this topic. In addition to this, students will design a website for the travel agency using Macromedia Dreamweaver.
Throughout year 11, students will develop their database skills by using MS Access to manage a given database. They will then go on to use a spreadsheet to calculate the costing of a given scenario and present data in appropriate formats (e.g. graphs and charts). Students will also study theory topics such as viruses, hacking, ICT in society and e-commerce in preparation for their GCSE exams.
Business and Communication Systems (1 GCSE)
The Business and Communication Systems course introduce students to the various aspects involved in running a business. Students use a variety of software programs to design business documents and to solve business problems.
The practical component of the course will cover topics within the following areas:
- Designing logos and advertising material for a business
- Writing business letters and memos
- Creating databases and spreadsheets for a business to calculate budgets and employee salaries.
The theory component of the course will cover topics within the following areas:
- Human Resources and Recruitment
- Communication in a business
- ICT in a business
- The business environment.
BTEC Business Studies (2 GCSEs)
A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. Students visit several businesses to learn about various aspects of business, like Customer service, manufacturing and communication in a business. Some of the businesses students will visit will be McDonalds, Fuller Smith and Turner, Coca Cola, Cadbury's World and British Airways.
The Diploma introduces students to the employment area they have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.
Students study the following topics:

- Investigating Financial Control
Students will then choose 3 out of the following units:
- Business Communication
- People in Organisations
- Providing Business and Administration Support
- Personal Selling
- Doing Business Online
- Exploring Business Enterprise
