Curriculum Structure:
KS3
In Year 7, students are taught in mixed ability groups during their first Month of Transition. The topics covered are differentiated to cater to the individual needs of the pupil.
Students are taught in ability groups afterwards. Students are then targeted to do a 2 year Key Stage 3. During this time, students are prepared for modules which take place at the end of Year 8.
The curriculum covers all areas of Mathematics. These include:
- Using and Applying Mathematics;
- Number and Algebra;
- Geometry and Measure;
- Statistics.
Regular assessments take place to monitor progress and to allow students the opportunity to move to a group that is better suited to their needs.
KS4
Mathematics GCSE
All students study GCSE Mathematics in Upper School, in Years 9, 10 & 11. The work covered builds on the students’ achievements in KS3. Students are entered for their exams in three units, Unit 2 which they will sit in March 2011 is a Non-Calculator paper. The students will take Unit 1 in November 2011 which is the Calculator paper and Unit 3 in June 2012 which is also the Calculator paper.
Statistics GCSE
Students who meet their target at the end of the 3 years are targeted to do Statistics, or start their AS Level Maths.
ICT
Information Technology plays an important part in the life of Acton High School. This is especially true in Maths where you will use computers to give you practice in a number of mathematical topics or to help you solve puzzles and problems.
Out of Lesson Provision/Clubs
You will be expected to complete at least two pieces of work out of lessons each week which will give parents and guardians an opportunity to see what you are doing at school. This is to consolidate and extend your classroom knowledge.
The Maths Clubs at lunch times and after school are run in small groups to help you understand topics and with your homework. There will also be games and puzzles.
