Science

You will find yourself doing lots of different things in Science lessons at Acton. Doing experiments, writing reports, solving problems and even inventing experiments of your own. You will work in small groups and be taught how to use equipment safely.

2 Year Key Stage 3 (KS3)

The traditional three year KS3 course has been condensed to 2 years to enable pupils to explore different avenues on our accelerated learning programme . In year 7 and 8, pupils are grouped according to ability and are given the opportunity to build on the work learned previously to develop their scientific skills in order to prepare them for their GCSE’s which they will aim to start in year 9. Pupils follow the Collins scheme which covers all three strands of Science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. ‘How Science Works’ is an integral part of the syllabus and is designed to help develop important skills of scientific enquiry.

Assessing Pupil Progress (APP) is regular to enable individual progress to be monitored. This can take a range of forms and is incorporated into both lessons and homework tasks. The aim is to share levels with pupils so that they may take ownership of their learning and have access to feedback which would inform them of what they must do to meet their target levels.

To help build on the learning pupils do in lesson, they are encouraged to regularly complete independent study using appropriate revision websites and books. To help develop exam technique, past SATs papers have been uploaded onto the schools virtual learning environment, ‘Fronter’. This is accessible to all Acton High School pupils who will be asked to complete a range of these over the course of the 2 year programme. Mark schemes are made available with corresponding level boundaries, so that pupils may self-assess their work to identify their own strengths and weaknesses. Such skills will help develop their ability to communicate scientific ideas in a precise manner using appropriate scientific vocabulary and furthermore, better prepare them for the demands of the KS4 course which follows.
