Accessing Language and Achieving Potential (ALAP)

"Students with English as an additional language are exceptionally well provided for" OFSTED 2006

We are lucky in Acton High School to have students from all over the world who speak many different languages including English as an additional language.

Are you one of these students?

"Those with English as an additional language make outstanding progress"
OFSTED 2006

To help you achieve your best we have a team of skilled and experienced teachers and teaching assistants in ALAP who have put in place a number of support programmes. For example:

  • We can support you in your lessons to help you understand the work and develop your English language skills
  • If you are at early stages of learning English you can join our induction groups and catch up classes which help you settle into school, introduce you to the different subjects and improve your English.
  • In years 10 and 11 you can join the EAL Option group where you are given extra help with your GCSE coursework and the opportunity to study for additional qualifications for example the IGCSE in ESL and the London Tests in English.

"Those who join school with little or no English quickly develop good language skills. Many students join the school at times other than the usual starting points and the school provides excellent support to enable them to settle in and catch up with their work" OFSTED 2006

We always meet students learning English as an additional language, especially beginners, either before or very soon after you start at Acton High School so that we can find out more about you and your abilities in English. This helps us to provide the most appropriate support and monitor your progress. We make sure your teachers have this information too!

When you come to ALAP you work in well resourced rooms which have an interactive white board and computers. You will be able to join the many lunch time and after school clubs that are organised every week. And if you, or someone in your family, needs more information or has any problems then ALAP's teachers and teaching assistants (we speak many different languages) are always available.
