Food Technology
Key Stage 3: Year 7 & 8 Food
At Key Stage 3 students undertake a 6 week rotation for each year (7 & 8). The rotation will consist of 1 practical lesson and 1 theory lesson each week however the focus of each year group will be different (see below). What is common to each year group however is the need to work as a team and be organised. Each practical lesson will be photographed and the photos will be displayed in their portfolio or intranet.
In year 7 students will be carrying out the Healthy Eating Project. They will be introduced to the kitchen and working methods. Each week they will cook dishes that will expand their skills and confidence while also increasing their knowledge of ingredients and kitchen equipment. Success comes through planning and being organised so make sure you record things in your planner.
In year 8 Students will be carrying out the Bread Project to expand further knowledge of ingredients and skills. They will journey around the globe trying recipes from different cultures. All students are encouraged to try something new which might be pleasantly tasty. We will also examine batch production, food poisoning and the importance of food in our daily lives.
Year 9 Food
In Year 9 students will further expand their knowledge of ingredients looking at their nutritional qualities. They will look at food in the context of what it does to the body. Diet, body mass and nutritional labelling will all be observed.
This course allows students to study the subject for six months, and they will learn a huge range of different skills from design and make to a variety of needs and situations concerned with food consumption, and investigate food product development within the food industry. In doing so they will develop a knowledge and understanding of food as a design material and consider its impact on the social, cultural, economic and environmental aspects of society. Currently, students have been exploring a range of multicultural dishes. They will create plans, research and design new and exciting dishes.
