eLearning
What is eLearning?
eLearning is the use of ICT to deliver learning activities for students. It is something that we use in addition to traditional teaching methods and activities.
Some of the potential benefits of eLearning are as follows:
- Learning can take place outside school hours
- Students don't have to be physically in the school building to make use of learning resources
- Students can build confidence and capability in private
- Instant feedback on performance can be obtained
- Students can choose what to work on (personalised learning)
- Learning activities can be richer and more interactive than with paper resources
- Students can work at their own pace
eLearning at Acton High School
At Acton High, students make use of eLearning in many ways:
Fronter is what is known as a Managed Learning Environment. Acton High staff are able to put customised resources for their students into Fronter. These resources can include templates for coursework, worksheets, homework, interactive tests, images, videos and sound files. Students can post comments onto messageboards and read responses from their peers and teachers. Students can also electronically "hand-in" work.
MyMaths is a service we have bought into that builds understanding and skills in Mathematics through a number of interactive tools. Maths teachers can set homework through MyMaths.
SAM Learning is another service we subscribe to, which covers virtually all subjects and is a good source of help for revision in Y9 and Y11 in particular.
To log on to SAM Learning you will need the centre ID for Acton High, a user ID and a password, using the details below.
CentreID: w3ah
UserID: DDMMYYFS - i.e. 6 digit date of birth, followed by initials (see below)
Password: same as UserID initially
The username is a 6 digit date of birth followed by 2 initials, e.g. 120395DJ is the acount for Darell Jones, born 12th March, 1995. Twins often have the same initials (and of course date of birth) and in this case one of the logins will have the number 1 after it, e.g. 120395DJ1 for Darell Jones' twin Daniel.
A member of staff can check logins, and reset passwords for students
Linguascope is a fun way of learning languages that the Modern Foreign Languages Department subscribe to.
How Can You Help?
Make sure your son/daughter knows how to log on to Fronter. Once into Fronter, it is possible to find login details for the other services mentioned above. Once in Fronter, explore what is available with your son or daughter. Currently Fronter is being used most actively in ICT, English and Media Studies. It is developing in other subject areas also.
