University of Cambridge Challenge Day
Nine students from Year 10 were fortunate enough to experience a Challenge Day at the University of Cambridge on Monday 30th January 2012. Students were given a series of challenges related to lateral thinking and general knowledge which had to be completed by the end of the day which they could work on collaboratively or as individuals. Our students chose to work as a team and won the challenge with the highest score of all the schools present.

London Communities Film Festival
Five student film-makers from Years 9, 10 and 11 attended the London Communities Film Festival at The Museum of London, Docklands on the evening of 11th January 2012 to celebrate the diversity of London as depicted by young urban documentary film-makers. The Acton High film “What and where is Acton Town” was the result of a project between the London Transport Museum and Acton High School who worked in partnership with students, their parents, local community groups and Chocolate Films.

Students Speak Out at Acton High School
On Wednesday 25th of January 2012 students representing 11 schools around Ealing descended on Acton High School along with 220 parents and friends to test their public speaking skills in front of a distinguished panel of 9 judges including the MP for Ealing North Steve Pound, the Ealing Met Police Borough Commander Andy Rowell, Professor David Jones, Senior Pro Vice-Chancellor University of West London, and various senior figures representing business and charity.

Visit By The Japanese School
On Thursday 19th of January 2012, Acton High School enjoyed our annual visit from the Japanese International School based in Creffield Road, West Acton. These exchange visits have taken place for over twenty years and are a highlight of the year for our year eight students who host them. This time we welcomed thirty two students and four teachers including Head Teacher Mr Tomomura and long standing staff member Ms Ota.

Exam Success with Autology
Since the Summer of 2011, Acton High students in Year 10 and 11 have been able to access thousands of electronic text books and vetted websites and videos through a service called Autology. It means students can access reliable and appropriate information quickly, rather than using the hit and miss approach of searching the web with a search engine such as Google. The content includes full revision guides from Letts and Lonsdale, as well as complete books from Heinemann.

Food Technology Students Enter Local Food Competition
Four of our students participated in the Rotary Young Chefs Competition, on Tuesday 17th January at the Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College.
Competitors had to produce a main meal for 2 people costing £4.50.

Acton High School Ahead Of The Rest With Computing Lessons
Industry figures have criticised the teaching of ICT in schools, saying that it is a missed opportunity. Major companies such as Microsoft and Google are calling for the teaching of more technical skills such as programming. We already offer Computing at GCSE and AS Level for under 16s at Acton High, a fact that has been picked up by the Ealing Times.
