Mock Interviews and Skills for Work

On Thursday 21st January 2010, Ealing and Hillingdon Education Business Partnership with Acton High School hosted a day called Mock Interviews and Skills for Work with year 10 students.

Year 10 students came into school in formal business wear ready to meet with a current employer who would interview them and participate in work related learning workshops.

‘Speak Out’ Challenge Regional Final

On Tuesday evening 27th January 2010, Cardinal Wiseman hosted the Jack Petchey ‘Speak Out’ Challenge regional final.

Clarissa Cailon and Roisin Mallon, both Year 10 students, represented Acton High School with confident and polished speeches on ‘The need to forgive’ and ‘How a near death experience demonstrated the need to make the most of our lives.’

Flexiday Year 8, Does a rocket fly further the more wings it has?

Year 8’s first flexiday of 2010 was a science based day, students had to investigate what effect the number of wings has on the distance a rocket can travel.

Year 9 students participated in a showcase of the Best of the English Department, from poetry, creative writing, investigative journalism and business. The highlights included:

Year 10, Animated Heads Workshop

Year 10 pupils worked with two visiting artists to create digital animations of faces. They used real objects, drawings and collage to create the faces then animated them using specialist software. They then created transparent 3D heads from dowelling and net curtains. The animated heads were then projected onto the head structures in a darkened room with spectacular results. Year 10, Wire Mas Workshops with Carl Gabriel

Carl Gabriel is a world renowned local artist who specialises in large, intricate wire sculptures. He has done a lot of work for the Notting Hill Carnival as well as commissions for various clients around Europe and the World (including Acton High). Everybody who sees his work is amazed by the scale and complexity of his creations.

Year 11 Maths Trip to Imperial College London

On 10th December 2009 a group of 25 students from Year 11 had the opportunity to visit Imperial College London, a prestigious university specialising in Maths, Science, Engineering, Medicine and Business. Imperial was placed 5th overall in the world in the 2009 Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings of universities worldwide.

“Jack and the Beanstalk“- Year 9 Trip to the Panto!

Recently the Drama department took 30 of our students to the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith for a backstage tour and workshops in lighting, presentation and stage management.

The Lyric were impressed by our students questions, participation and show of interest in all the activities. As a result they generously donated tickets to see this years’ pantomime, 'Jack and the Beanstalk' .
